This summer, I have really been working on adding to my inventory a variety of smaller pieces. Especially, the little 6x6" canvases.
I usually work on these in pairs that could be purchased together or individually.

I can create these in a short time. I start by choosing a selection of coordinating scrapbook papers, using on 6 x 6 pad makes it easy. Then I find a vintage sewing pattern or photograph to fussy cut out of white cardstock. Dig through a stash of ephemera and little accent bits to enhance your composition. Laying out on the canvas, moving around until you are satisfied, then snap a quick picture using your cell phone.
The bright and fun colors in one pad can help you make a quick design. Often there are strip or tags that could be used or I may add a quote.
I use Faber-Castell Pitt Markers over the Mod Podge to paint in my ladies. You could also use, paper dolls or prima stamp sets to add your figure...or use flowers, butterflies and such as your focus.
Paint the sides of a little canvas and adhere you square on top, you may want to trim slightly by a 16th of an inch or so. I often let ephemera hang over the sides that I can wrap down and over the sides adhering with gel medium.
